TPM (Types per Minute) is a three-axis display variable typeface. Inspired by the displays used in the early stages of technology, TPM is based on a 5×7 array of dots. The weight axis (BT) increases or decreases the size of the dots, the width axis (OS) controls the horizontal distance between the dots and the slant (HR) tilts the matrix from 0 to 30º. The combination of these three variable parameters create a huge amount of typographic possibilities that can be used for branding, visual identities, packaging and many other digital and print applications.
This typeface was the result of an experimental research project about using variable fonts to display information. Through a pulse oximetry sensor and a virtual monitor, the three main vital signs (Body Temperature, Oxygen Saturation and Heart Rate) were represented in real-time in the variable axis of weight, width and slant, respectively. This allowed for a double-layered transmission of information, where the letterforms carry the data, and language carries a message.
